Tabanan is one of indonesia`s richest rice growing districts With paddies stretching from the coast to as high as 700 meters on the lower slope of mount batukaru, The second highest mountain spring on bali. Every temple on tabanan contain a shrines venerating this mountains spirit "MAHADEWA". Tabanan `s others major summits as Shanghyang and Pohon. Three labor-intensive crops of new high yield rice are growing each year, With soybeans planted in betwen to rejuvenate the soil. The subak [ traditional village organization for farming ] of Tabanan average 12-15 tons of rice per hectare, making the inhabitant some of the most productive rice farmer in all indonesia. Besides rice there are crops of tea, cacao, groundnuts, and tropical fruits. As you leave Tabanan`s southern plains and drive north to Bedugul the landscape change from tiers of gentle rice filed to gardens of onions, cabbages, and papaya. Thatched palm huts give way to sturdy cottages made of wood, tile and stone. In the southern village the kitchen is separated from others building of the familly compound, but in these cold mountains village people cook in the same building where they sleep and live. For the traveler Tabanan offers remote mountains villages with fresh air ,crip air, picturesque hill resorts ; overflowing fruit, vegetable, and flower market.
